I'm conflicted on this. On one hand, I would like the fact that the person I was sending a gift was able to get something they really wanted, and giving isn't about the gift so much as it is about the thought. "The thought is what counts." So on that side of the coin, I'm OK with it.

However, I can see the downside for the gift giver who isn't as open minded as I am. "I spent time picking out a gift that I thought you would truly enjoy and basically you decided you'd rather have the cash? See what I get you next time, it'll likely be a bag of crap."

So yeah, there's etiquette at play here. And you know our current society's "me-first" attitude is going to wreak holy havoc on the previous generations' feelings.

I would rather a person return a gift I got them than to keep it and never use it. I try to give gift receipts so if they do want to return, they can get the true value of it, and so they can get something they like and/or want.

This year I tried convincing the in-laws to give my kids gift certificates to Wal Mart, because then I tell my kids I will buy their gift cards and they can spend the money wherever they wish, instead of being locked into a certain store. But my MIL got him a Kmart gift certificate, ugh! I don't shop there!!
